Fuel Savings Calculator

Find out how much you can save.

To help our clients quickly see what fuel consumption savings look like, our team created this simple but effective fuel savings calculator.

Using the sliders below, enter the total number of vehicles, monthly distance traveled by each vehicle, cost of fuel in your area, the fuel efficiency of your fleet and how much you are looking to save.

Fleet size

Our slider lets us know how many vehicles are in your fleet. If your fleet is made up of only two vehicle types, it may be worth doing two separate calculations to improve your accuracy.

Total kilometers per vehicle per month

This can be sourced directly from your telematics or vehicle tracking provider. Using a GPS tracking device, you can quickly download how many kilometers each vehicle has traveled each month.

If you don’t have a tracking provider, here are a few benchmarks to gauge your vehicle’s distance traveled per month (we’ve assumed that each of these vehicles is being operated during a 5-day working week).

  • New York Cab (double shift) – 12,500 km per month
  • Class 8 Truck – 8,400 km per month
  • Transit Bus – 5,900 km per month
  • Light Commercial Vehicle – 1,700 per month
  • Delivery Truck – 1,600 per month
  • Average Car Owner – 1,100 km per month

For example, the average distance traveled per vehicle from SicuroTrack™ is 1,617.88 km per month at the time of writing.

Fuel price per liter

If you don’t have direct access to your current fuel costs, the historical price of fuel is widely documented online. A good resource that provides a reliable and up-to-date benchmark is www.globalpetrolprices.com.

Kilometers traveled per liter

The fuel efficiency of each vehicle is published online by manufacturers. Please note that these figures are sourced from tests that significantly differ from real-world driving situations.

In extreme cases, deviations can make up to a 50% variation. While legally approved, fuel consumption testing often doesn’t consider certain factors that significantly affect fuel use. The tests can take place inside indoor testing environments that remove the variables of gradient and wind direction or speed.

For optimal results during testing, manufacturers run high-pressure tires, turn off the air conditioning and remove all unnecessary weight from the vehicle. These are just some examples of how test conditions differ from the environment in which your vehicles will be operating.

From our experience, if you use the manufacturer’s official fuel consumption metric and apply a 10-25% adjustment for real-world performance, it will provide you with a more accurate picture of fuel consumption and cost.

Your target savings on fuel

Fuel costs make up around 60% of the total fleet operating budget. If you can tackle excessive fuel use, you can substantially decrease your business outgoings. Implementing vehicle tracking, incentivizing eco-friendly driving practices and reducing the unnecessary amount of idling time help keep fuel use as efficient as possible.
